The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is dedicated to reducing the losses that result from motor vehicle crashes. Each year, the IIHS performs vehicle safety ratings, which evaluate two aspects of safety:

Crash avoidance and mitigation: Technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity

Vehicles with high ratings in both areas are named IIHS Top Safety Picks. The IIHS tests are comprehensive, including frontal crashes, side crashes, roof strength tests, head restraint and seat tests that simulate how a vehicle would handle a rear impact. IIHS also tests headlight performance and any collision-warning systems in the vehicle
