THE RETURN OF THE ROTARY ENGINE

In 2019, Mazda drivers will have a new reason to Feel Alive™, thanks to the long-awaited arrival of the Mazda RX-9, powered by the innovative rotary engine. For Mazda, the “feel alive” concept is about exhilaration and emotion. No vehicle better captures this experience than the RX-9: a roadster that will surely be in a class of its own.

A successor to the RX-7 and RX-8, the RX-9 will feature the same configuration as an MX-5 Miata with a front engine and rear-wheel drive. Also known as a Wankel engine, the rotary engine on the RX-9 utilizes a unique system which converts pressure into a rotating motion. All parts consistently rotate in one direction, which is what sets it apart from conventional engines. The result is raw, dynamic power which has established the rotary engine a favorite in the racing world.

The rotary engine for the Mazda RX-9 is based on Mazda’s RX-VISION concept, which introduces next-generation SKYACTIV®-R technology. Even after discontinuing production of the RX-8 in 2012, Mazda continued research and development to further evolve the rotary engine. This next-generation rotary engine has been christened SKYACTIV®-R, a name intended to represent the company’s commitment to applying the most advanced technologies and the same high aspirations that yielded SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY.

Mazda is the only auto maker in the world to successfully bring to market and mass-produce the rotary engine.
